Picking and Choosing Your Insurance

on May 5, 2016by Shelly Evansin Insurance

While insurance can be a great safety net for your home, health and valuable items, you aren’t always going to get your money’s worth.

Don’t let yourself get talked into certain types of insurance just because the salesman was good. Sometimes your insurance can end up costing you more in the long run.

Let’s discuss some types of insurance that you are better off without.

1. Identity theft insurance.

types of insuranceWhile identity theft is a major issue and you want protection, having an insurance isn’t going to deter would-be thieves. What identity theft insurance can do for you is help you cover some of the costs after the theft has occurred. This means legal fees, postage costs and other small items.

2. Pet insurance.

The cheapest pet insurance is about $150 a year and often costs much more for full coverage (as much as $100-150 per month!). The downside to this type of insurance is that you’re unlikely to find one that covers things like dental work, grooming and routine checkups.

3. Cellphone insurance.

Most cellphone insurance plans have a long list of exceptions. For example, some won’t replace cellphones with water damage, which is a pretty common issue.

4. Rental car insurance.

If you don’t have full-coverage with your car insurance provider, you may want to spend the extra money on rental car insurance. But if you have full coverage, chances are your insurance provider will help cover any damages. Additionally, your credit card company often helps protect you in cases like this. Check with your credit card first before purchasing rental car insurance.

5. Travel insurance.

Travel insurance covers the costs of anything beyond your control, such as getting sick or natural disaster. This insurance doesn’t usually cover anything if you have to cancel the trip, unless you pay extra. Priced at around 5% of your vacation cost, you’re looking at a pretty good chunk of money for something you’re unlikely to need. If you want a travel insurance plan that allows cancellations, you’d be looking at ten times that amount. Sometimes travel insurance is a good idea (especially if you’re headed somewhere with unstable weather conditions or if you have health issues). Be sure to check with your health insurance provider if they already cover travel insurance.

6. Wedding insurance.

In most cases, a wedding insurance is an added expense you don’t need. This type of insurance can cost $300-400 dollars or more but it doesn’t cover much. A good credit card company will help protect any purchases made, especially if someone doesn’t deliver the correct bouquets, catering, etc. This is just a waste of money after already spending a lot to make sure your wedding is perfect.

7. Extended warranties.

All kinds of goods come with extended warranties with extra costs. The thing about these warranties is that they’re very specific. They don’t cover issues or repairs needed and even contain exceptions. Consider finding out the cost of common repairs first. If that costs less than the warranty, you can easily save money by not getting that extended warranty.

8. Home warranties.

Much like extended warranties, a home warranty includes a ton of exclusions. These exclusions are often ridiculous. A clause in the warranty stating that the items in your home must be properly maintained means that a couple of scratches will keep you from being able to use your warranty.

Do your homework. Make sure that the type of insurance you’re applying for is necessary and will not get you into more debt.

Pet insurance, I can tell you from bitter experience, is something you will want to have when it’s needed. My beloved Dalmatian was hit by a car and I had vet bills that were staggering. I have sued the driver’s insurance company but of course they don’t see a pet being hit by a car as anything they should pay for, suggesting it is my fault for allowing my dog on the road. The ploy they have adopted is to drag the issue out in court until I can not afford to continue the fight, what with the huge vet bills. Apparently if I had pet insurance my insurance company would be suing them, so I would have had both the vet bills paid as a modem of vengeance as well, knowing the driver’s insurance premiums went up.

    Hi Mark,

I’m sorry to hear about your dog! Yes, these are just general types of insurances that I’ve found most people never get full value from. I think in the case of pet insurance you get your moneys worth if there is (God forbid) an accident like what happened with your dog, if you have an old pet or you have the type of pet that is prone to illness. Otherwise a lot of the people I’ve known haven’t gotten full value. My sister has had her dog 6 years and last year there was an incident that we did wish we had pet insurance, but when we think about having paid the premium of 6 years with no incident, it was really a wash.

Unfortunately insurance is always one of those things you wish you had after the fact LOL. As always, go with your gut on whether or not buying insurance is the right thing for you!

I’m sorry the lawsuit didn’t go your way! I hope your dog is feeling better!

Thank you for replying to my comment, which was unexpected but nice. Yes, insurance is one of those things everyone wishes they had after the fact. And true it can be a wash sometimes, but once I needed a roof repaired immediately and I did not have the funds at hand to do so. It was nice to simply call my insurance adjuster and have the problem taken care of and the bill I could not afford to pay at the time covered. Of course years later without another claim I’ve paid enough in premiums to have reroofed the house completely.
