10 Steps to Put Your Spending Under Control

on July 14, 2009by Shelly Evansin Others

Exercising control over your personal spending is still the best way to avoid bad debt.

Below are 20 smart steps on how you can be a better shopper and how you can stay out of debt problems:

  1. Create a list before shopping.

Before taking a trip to the mall or to the grocery, list everything you NEED to buy. Seriously consider the items you need to purchase and make sure that you’re not forgetting anything. Remember, if something is not on your list, then obviously you don’t really NEED to buy it.

  2. Don’t use your credit card for unplanned purchases.

Even if you see an item on sale, don’t buy it, if it was not on your list in the first place. Just stick with your list and you won’t go wrong.

  3. Shop around first before purchasing.

Shopping around is a smart strategy that you should not overlook. This is especially true if you’re planning to make a large purchase. Different merchants sell items at different prices. All you have to do is check the quality of the item and go for the cheaper one.

  4. Wait for the item to go on sale.

Needless to say, purchasing an item on sale would mean bigger savings for your budget. Check out the schedule of sale with your local shop or supermarket and plan your shopping on that date to save more.

  5. Don’t be lured by the packaging.

A product may seem larger and better because its packaging looks more attracted. But don’t be fooled. Check out the label. Compare the price per unit and compare the ingredients. That way, you can really see the difference.

  6. Consider the quality of the items you purchase.

Food items that are on sale are not always the best buys. Yes, you want to save money but don’t forget to consider the quality as well. Make sure that you’re getting your money’s worth.

  7. Take time to read the labels.

It always pays to spend a little more time reading the labels and inspecting the packaging of a product.

  8. Avoid the holiday rush.

Merchants often raise their prices during the holiday rush so it’s best to plan your purchases ahead and shop before the holiday season comes.

  9. Keep receipts and warranties

. Be sure to keep the receipt and warranty slip of the products you purchase. This way, you can easily get a refund or return the item in case you may have complaints.

  10. Buy only what you need.

Again, we cannot stress enough the importance of planning ahead. Do you really need it or do you just want it? Seriously consider if you something is worth the purchase.
